Method
- 1
Grease the inner pot generously with butter. Add the macaroni, milk, cooking cream, water, mustard and nutmeg and stir well.
- 2
Cook for 2–2½ hours on LOW or 1–1½ hours on HIGH. Stir once halfway through so the macaroni doesn't stick to the sides.
- 3
Start tasting after 1 hour (HIGH) or 2 hours (LOW): the macaroni should be just al dente. Slow cookers vary, so keep a close eye on it the first time.
- 4
Stir in the cheese, ham and peas (optional) and leave for another 15 minutes with the lid on until everything is hot and creamy.
- 5
Too thick? Stir in a splash of warm milk. Season with pepper; salt is usually unnecessary thanks to the cheese and ham.
