Method

  1. 1

Fry the mince and onion in oil until browned and crumbly. Spoon into the slow cooker with the carrot, passata, tomato purée, stock, thyme and Worcestershire sauce.

  2. 2

Season with salt and pepper and cook with the lid on for 4–5 hours on LOW or 2–3 hours on HIGH.

  3. 3

For the last half hour, stir in the peas (optional) and the cornflour mixed with 2 tbsp cold water. This thickens the filling nicely.

  4. 4

Meanwhile, boil the potatoes and mash them with the milk, butter and salt to a firm mash.

  5. 5

Spoon the filling into an ovenproof dish, spread the mash over the top and rough it up with a fork. Place under a hot grill for 10 minutes (or 15 min at 220 °C) until golden.
